In collaboration with Rogue Nation and each of you, Haven’s Folly will be coming to the Playa for Burning Man 2024.
Enter a portal and emerge into an immersive and beautifully disconcerting world of illusionary patterns and shapes where the aim is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.
Physics: Haven’s Folly will be an immersive chamber built inside a 20′ x 20′ x 20′ cube. Low ambient light, soft seating, opaque walls, and good air flow provide a comfortable refuge from the heat, sun, and wind by day and the vibrant chaos of the playa at night. Visually, the plain outer walls of the cube hide a chamber in which every surface is covered by stretched fabric tapestries of vibrantly colored organic shapes and patterns. These will form a swirling flow of energy up to the darkness of space above, where a large globe of epoxy-stabilized charred wood (another design pattern I’m working on) softly illuminates the space with ambient amber light coming from many holes and cracks.
Flow Art: I have been working on making prints using randomized mathematical flow models over patterns and structures to generate organic brush-like patterns. These flows play with the eye’s desire to extract structure to balance shapes and order on the perceptual edge of organic, chaotic patterns. My vision for this piece is to create an environment in which such flows play over every surface to create a chamber of illusions.
While my intent is to unveil the final designs and patterns at the burn, there are several two higher resolution prototype images that would go on a 6′ x 6′ panel. These show the kind of patterns and structures I’m incorporating into the space. My goal is to have all four 20′ x 20′ walls and part of the ceiling on the inside covered with similar patterns created for this piece. The final design will end up being in a rainbow of colors and use many patterns and flows to create the full effect of a swirling, organic energy flow playing over symbols and geometric structures while spiraling into the night sky.
In the center of the space I plan to build a raised square black platform for sitting and relaxing on. This cushioned platform will be covered with a black fabric on which will be written numerous quotes for reflection around the theme of haven, refuge, or safety. The main expense for this project is printing custom tapestries, followed by covering the structure with durable canvas, the wood required for the wood seating, and the equipment to secure it to the playa. The steel frame and additional hardware will be a mix of my own supply and those loaned by Rogue Nation Village.
